In the first article “Two –Timing: Life Lesson from “Big Love” brings up the idea of bringing a second wife into the household to help with chores and the children while the parents work. This could possible take away some stress that they may have. I personally would not go along with this idea. I would not feel comfortable with another women walking around mu house. Also I believe it would cause possible problems between the husband and the wife’s relationship.

In the next article "Singled Minded" talks about how people end up single but its not forced upon them to be single and they are okay with that. I personally would not want to spend the rest of my life a single person!

comments

The first article discussed how women aren’t as happy as they use to be and they states how the feminist may be a reason as to why they may not be as happy. But then I agree how the author says that happiness doesn’t have a definition and depends on the person on what truly makes them happy.
Then the second article talks how unhappy people are increasing today. This author also said it wwas because of the feminist movement as well.
Both article were very similar and very interesting.

comments

Anger is becoming a major problem between marriages causing arguments and bitterness between the couples. Many of the arguments may come from one may feel they are doing everything in the household such as taking care of the family , bills and household things to be done. Also one partner may feel they don’t receive even credit for their effort or willingness to help out. In the article “The Myth of Co-Parenting: How It Was Supposed to Be. How it Was.” By Hope Edelman talks about how her she was raised and her mother did just about everything in the family and she explains how her marriage is going the same route and that’s not how it was suppose to be in her plans. Edelman says “It began to make me spitting mad, the way the daily duties of parenting and home ownership started to rest entirely on me.”(pg 323). Here Edelman is expressing her anger towards her having the responsibility while her husband goes and tries to seek his dream career. Edelman feels there needs to be change before she will have to result to another option. Also she is unhappy because she wanted to get away from this image; her idea of her marriage was totally different. In the article “My Problem with Her Anger” by Eric Bartels expresses his problem with his wife’s anger. He explains how it bothers him a lot and she needs to change her attitude because he is being hurt mentally and physically. Bartels says “What gets me though is how little credit I get for the effort.”(pg 329). Here he explains how he tries and he gets no effort and he feels he should and not be pushed to the side by his wife because his wife is upset and angry. Here both authors explain their anger to their spouse due to the roles in the household. Both authors feel their marriage is out of control and the feel they need to find a way to fix their angry.

comments

In the article “Many Women at Elite Colleges Set Career Path to Motherhood” by Louise Story discusses the issue of how many young women go to these good colleges but in the end they will be a stay at home mother. Story says “Yet the likelihood that so many young women plan to opt out of high powered careers presents a conundrum.”(pg.292). Her she basically is staying that women are leaving their good jobs to take care of their children. In the article “Work vs. Family, Complicated by Race” by Lynette Clemeston, discusses the issue that most black women don’t plan to leave their jobs, they plan to take care of their children while they have the job. Clemeston says “Most in the roomful of lawyers, technology experts, corporate managers and entrepreneurs had read dispatches from the so called “mommy wars,” the books and articles grounded in the glutch between working and stay-at-home mothers. But for the women in attendance-all of them black-those discussions inevitably fell short” (pg.299). Here She is saying that women feel they are not included in the opt-out debate and they should be included. Here both authors disagree because Story is stating that all women plan to be stay at home others but however that not true because Clemeston is saying that black women don’t plan to leave their jobs but still take of their family and children.

comments

Work vs. Family, Complicated by Race

This article was about how it is more common for black mothers to continue to work while they have children. I don’t disagree at all, I do believe white mother are more common to end up at house mothers/wife. However I also think it has something to deal with how they were raised and how their mother raised them, in other words u can say the “tradition”.

Marriage Agreement

In this article the mother/wife and husband followed the traditional roles but after awhile things got complicated and they decided to develop a contract to help their marriage and family and they both signed it. Since then things have been well for them. I totally agree with this, it’s something different and they worked to together to solve the problem.

comments

I personally plan to have kids when I have a very stable job and then take care of them until they reach somewhere around kindergarten or first grade; which was said in the article.

“What Yale Women Want, and Why It is Misguided”

I thought the articled jumped around a lot, I couldn’t quite follow the article, I may have just read it to fats. I personally don’t have a problem with a person being homosexual but I do not approve of it, I believe it is wrong. From my religious back ground I see marriage as a union between a man and women not male and male or women and women. I don’t think homosexuals should be able to marry, its just not right. They don’t have super hero powers. They both put on some type of clothing or armor that covers their body. In some ways they are different because batman is older than iron man. Also their personalities are totally different. Superman and Spiderman are similar in colors in regards to their costume. Both have red in them. Also batman, Spiderman and iron man are all humans. Superman and wolverine are not humans. Wolverine is different from all the other super heroes because he really isn’t on a good or bad side; he just fights.
“Staying at Home”

I agree with what this article because it shows a mother is still able to have a career and still stay home and be able to take care of her children. Also it shows it is still an option regardless of what the media thinks. It is definitely still possible to do BOTH.

“You’re Not Sick”

Also I agree how she said that in most cases of electronic communication it is easy for people to lie about who they are and what they are really about. Also the section about men dumping women for “no reason is very true. This type of outcome was very common for couples in high school (LOL!). People would just get into a relationship then break up for no specific reason at all.

comments

I really wasn’t expecting the article to go that way, it was kind of surprised me. However, I never thought a “stay at home mother” is considered to be a failure. I just saw it as an option that a mother could take instead of going to work every day. Also I think the “stay at home mother” was always good for the family because she is there to help the kids, prepare meals and support the husband. If the mother feels they don’t want to take that route then they should simply find work. Either way, neither option should not be knocked down or looked down upon because it’s the mother’s decision.

comments

1.	The essay requirements are pretty much straight forward. I really don’t have any questions about it.

2. I also really don’t have any questions about the reading. I understood most of the readings that were assigned to read.

3.	A keep point that I noticed in most of the online readings where that were discussing the topic of mostly women and not being able to marry because of college degree or not having one. Also that woman today is becoming the breadwinner of the family while the father stays home and takes care of the children.

comments

“She Works. They’re Happy”
I do agree that the women are becoming the primary source of income and the husband staying at home is becoming more common in marriages today. My family was somewhat similar however both my parents went into the workforce to bring in income to the home.

“Men Marrying Wealthier Women”
I feel that wealthy women shouldn’t be knocked down because they have a well paid and the ability to provide for herself. Men shouldn’t feel less of man however they tend to do. I thought this article was good, however I can’t say wether I agree because I haven’t experienced this myself.

“Marriage and Women Over 40”
I wasn’t surprised that women are not married before the age of 40 with a college degree are less likely to marry. However, in the article it stated that the percentage of women marrying with different levels of education has changed over time. I think this article relates back to the article “Men Marrying Wealthier Women” because it’s the fact that men want to come out on top in the marriage. Hopefully I will marry before the age of forty!!

“Casual Sex - and no emotional Wreckage?”
I do agree from discussions from friends that casual sex is becoming more common among men and women. Also however I think men are more likely to call it “casual sex” before women because women tend to categorize relationships with people because it’s more important to them.

comments

Well I’m not quite sure of what makes an article effective. I guessing the usual qualifications that make a good paragraph or essay. Such as syntax, staying on topic, tone of the paper, things like that. Effective to me means is has a impact on the reader, it makes them and they are able to understand the main point of the article.

Well I would use most likely use the list of learning outcomes that I used in my previous GSW class because that is what I used to critique my own essays. They are: rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, writing processes, knowledge conventions and values of exploration.

comments

After reading “Debunking Myths about Marriages and Families” I felt the article was very straight forward. I was able it understand each myth and they were organized and very well explained. I feel as though there is no “correct” family. All families are going to be different for the fact of difference of race and culture. As I am African American I felt I had a better connection with the 4th myth “The Unstable African American Family”. I do agree with t=article of how many people categorize blacks into being lower in income, usually singled parented and less educated. However, this is not always true because I have both of my parents and who worked for good paying jobs. I also felt there was a better connection with “State of the Unions” then the other text.

comments

1.	Yes I do see such distinctions. Some of the cultures felt that marriage should not be based upon love but rather for wealth and social status, etc. Also some cultures said the two joining together should fall in love because they are two good standing people. On the other hand some cultures felt it was okay to go seek romantic love outside the marriage. Romantic love was more as being intimate with another partner. Marriage love rarely existed to because in some cultures the couple wasn’t even aloud to show affection towards each other.

2.	I really didn’t see any connections because “The State of Our Unions” was more based on statics of marriage and divorce. Where “Radical Idea of Marrying for Love” was describing cultures ideas of what marriage is and how it should be done and whether marrying for love is okay, which it is.

comments

From the reading “The Radical Idea of Marrying for Love” most of it I have read or heard before. For example the most marriages in the older centuries were not about the matter of love but usually for public standing, political standing or even about money. Most marriages were arranged and sometimes controlled by the parents, grandparents or even the in-laws. Also that they usually believe love shouldn’t exist or that love is suppose to happen “after” marriage. I personally am grateful for being able to live in a country where they believe marriage is about love and nothing else. I would dislike marrying someone I didn’t know or even like and I had other feelings for another partner.

What shocked me the most was to read that women of Venezuela that were going to give birth were to tell all the men they had slept with that they were going to have a child. I totally disagree with this. The child would never know who his real father. In America this would be totally unacceptable.

comments

I don’t think they are making an argument for the reader to believe. I think it’s just a article for awareness or for anyone’s curiosity of marriage and divorce rate in America. However they do give lots of data to prove their theories and what is being said in the article. For example they talked about how being married has an economic advantage. “Compared to those continuously married, those who never married have a reduction in wealth of 75% and those who divorced and didn’t marry have a reduction of 73%.”(pg 226, WARAC)

comments

While reading “State of the Unions” I found myself thinking would I ever really get married, which hopefully one day I will be. I really didn’t enjoy all the statistics the reading gave. They were a little bit overwhelming but I will say it was good data. I found the very interesting and I agree with mostly everything the reading stated. That marriage is taking a major decline due to delaying the first marriage, couples not wanting to get married (unmarried cohabitation) and people not remarrying. Also I do agree that being married does have a economic benefit because married couples are able to lean on each other for help and whereas a single person has to depend on themselves. I know personally that my parent’s income is well and they work well with each other and they both have paying jobs. However my older cousin is single and is having to work two jobs to support her, which could be overwhelming sometimes. Also I did not know that unmarried cohabitation is becoming popular. I could understand why people would do that due to a lot of different reasons as the reading stated. One for example being couples want to see what it is like before marriage to make sure that marriage will be good. I totally disagree with living with one another before marriage but others think it’s a good idea. Overall I enjoyed the reading.

comments
